Maui Vacations

When a person thinks of a Hawaiian vacation they usually think of Maui. Maui was created by two volcanoes smacking up against one another, both are now dormant and on the west side is a long extinct volcano and on the east is the dormant volcano Haleakala. Located at the foot of the eroding hillsides of the West Maui Mountains you find Lahiana.

Up until 1845 Lahaina was the capital of Hawaii and at the heart of the whaling industry. Lahaina was the hangout for scoundrels, ladies of the night and maybe even a few pirates. Now Lahaina is a fun port town that celebrates it's history and still shows a sailor a good time, even if he has settled down and has two toddlers in tow.

Lahaina has many historical venues for you to visit and learn about the rich history of this region. Visit the Baldwin House and the old Courthouse. Also visit the Lahaina Fish Company, have a delicious meal and gaze at the view.

Up the coast about 10 miles from Lahaina is the resort of Kaanapali. This is the largest resort on Maui. In August every year there is the Maui Onion Festival where they celebrate the Maui Kula onion. There is lots of food and fun for the kids. Puu Kekaa, AKA "Black Rock" shoots skyward out of the sea in front of the Kaanapali beach. Locals like to show off their diving skills from this rock.

In this area off of the beach there is some of the best snorkeling in all of Maui. The Kaanapali Beach resort has 6 luxury hotels, 2 golf courses, 35 tennis courts, and a shopping center. The shopping is great here so do like Wilma and Betty and say, "charge it".

Further up from Kaanapali is Kapalua. This is a resort that sits at the foot of the mountains where two crescent shaped bays face each other. This area has been deemed a marine life conservancy and visitors can dive with the local marine life. This is fun and not to be missed. There are also beautiful golf courses that have been built with nature in mind. Developers have been careful to do all they can to keep Hawaii as pristine as possible and this is one example of their fine efforts.

If you visit Maui go to the Iao Valley. It is said that the bones of Kings were buried here. It is known as one of the wettest place on earth, which would account for the lushness of the vegetation. Visit only during good weather as heavy rains make for dangerous hiking and you could get stuck inside the valley.

You simply must visit the Maui Ocean Center in Maalaea. This is the place if you want to swim with the fishes. This state-of-the-art marine park has more than 60 displays and exhibits; many of them interactive so bring your flippers and bathing suit. You can take a walk through a transparent tunnel that is in a 750,000-gallon tank. The fish are all around you and it is a very cool experience. The kids will love it.

The road to Hana is notorious for its hairpin turns and narrow road. It is a challenge to drive not only because of the road but the scenery is truly magnificent. From this road you can explore the beaches of southern Maui, which are protected from the harsh storms by the giant dormant volcano Haleakala.
