Molokai Vacations

Molokai is one of the more isolated islands. This is because there has been little transportation to the island but this was recently remedied by adding two new ferry runs to the island daily. If you are looking to have fast food joints and shopping centers you have come to the wrong place. There are less more than 7,000 inhabitants on the island so you may as well have the place to yourself.

At the Sheraton Molokai Lodge and Beach Village, Na Kauhale is offered as a rustic yet comfortable version of "camping". The structure resembles an elevated yurt-like tent that has queen sized beds, solar lights, bathrooms with showers that have hot running water. There are 40 double unit bungalows located on Kaupoa Beach. If this isn't the accommodation for you then you can stay at the Molokai Sheraton Lodge. There are 22 rooms and they run about $395 a night.

It is claimed that the Hula comes from Molokai. The other islands make the same claim but on Molokai there is the annual festival of Ka Hula Piko. It is held on the beach at Papohaku Beach Park in May. These folks are serious about the hula. It begins at dawn with the sound of the conch shell being blown to start the festivities that last all day.

Kalaupapa National Historical Park is the area that kept the exiled victims of Leprosy. Father Damien worked amongst the sick with little thought to his own health. The cliffs soar 2,000 feet effectively imprisoning the victims. Now they are free to leave if they wish but many prefer to stay on. There are about 50 of the original inhabitants that still live there. Damien Tours is a service that is run by the patients.
